Christopher gave me some excellent suggestions and guidance on how to style all the tokens.
Now we need to somehow highlight the token that was most recently clicked. here is a thought on how this might be possible:

is this a reasonable approach? or is there a better way to do this?
side note: i have been using jqwidgets for several years now, and now HTML elements. this is the best widget collection i have ever seen by far.
